If you do it right, it won't look too bad as lilmaniac said. I am about the replace the hard drive in the same model as yours.

Is it hard to replace the screen have you ever done it?

you can fix/replace just about anything in an ipod and put it back together to make it look mint. My buddy fixes about 3 a week and can do wonders with them.

I replaced the hard drive in a couple. Usually they give you this flat ended thing to pry it open with. Once you get it open, be careful on how you handle the ribbons. It looks like 6 really small phillips screws that you have to unscrewto take up this gray thing that houses the hard drive, board and the screen. It is not as easy as replacing the hard drive, but it doesn't look too difficult. If you are mechanically inclined it's like a 30 minute job if that.
