also, if you end up getting a dell, like i did, check http://www.fatwallet.com , dell puts out coupon codes once a week, wait untill they put out a 20% off coupon, plus they normally have some kind of advertised promo, like free cd burner or printer or something. Also, buy the minimum amount of RAM, then buy aftermarket stuff from new egg or somewhere and install it yourself, it is simple. I saved a ton of money.

I'm a big fan of Toshiba even though I own a gateway laptop. I would look into something like this:
