Parents puter just went down the other day as well. Literally thousands and thousands of pictures gone because the dummies didn't save them to a disc.

I'm hoping I can recover something. I found a 250gb 7200 rpm hard drive on newegg for $80, so I think I'll jump on that. I'll steal my parents' external HD and boot off of it, and perhaps I can get my files off my current HD. Add on top of that I have to fix the LCD inverter. I think I'm going to fix the HD, Inverter and add more RAM... should come up to approx $150, which ain't bad.

you can simply throw in a ubuntu desktop disc, boot it up from that and open the NTFS drive from there..
