I have been haveing some hard starts with my truck lately, so I thought I should get my alt and battery tested.

Battery tested as good

12.53 volts car off

14.6 volts car on

Alt (stock 105 amp ac delco)

I have been told by some ppl that thos alts are just junk..... I found a 160 amp HO alty on ebay for 130.00 + ship

but i can get a stock alty for like 60 bucks.

So being a poor sob I am gonna go stocky

I don't think your alt may be bad, just because it says it rated at 105 amps and yours is tested at 84 amps doesn't mean your alts bad. It should mean your vehicle needs 84 amps and your alt is giving just that. But with the hard starts I'm not sure, it may be your alt, or it could be something else.

it does not look like the alt is dead from that voltage my friend.

and like the guy said above, just because its only crankin out ~80 amps does not mean its toast, means thats all that is required of it at that givin time.

or did they REMOVE the alternator from the car and test it?

I remember testing my car at autozone, they connected their machine with the alt in vehicle, and they assumed it was dead because it put out ~45 amps not the 85 that it is rated, and at a nice constant 14.4v. They highly reccommended that I buy a new alt, since it wasn't putting out 85 amps. Just letting you know that people who work at a store or shop, don't always know what is going on.

ok what i ahve surmised as of now is I have a WEAK alt and my battery is entirely too small for my truck

battery is 500 cca and 625 @ 32 degress

the battery I got for my little geo storm had more cca than this.

could it be that the alt is just too weak to keep the little battery charged enuff?
