I purchased a BNIB Soundstream T4 from a local dealer and he said it is a dual 2 ohm sub. So, I wired it to 1 ohm (because I have run this amp at 1 ohm many times for 10-20 minutes and the amp never became more than warm).
Well, I glance at the box and it reads Dual 1 ohm, which means I have the sub wired at a .5 ohm load (if it is indeed a dual 1 ohm sub) I have not put a DMM on the coils yet, so I'm not positive of the coil configuration... YET.
I ran the amp at this impedance heavily for 20 minutes before I saw the actual coil configuration on the box. The amp was barely warm at this point but the sub, rated at 900 rms, was bottoming out slightly at near 3/4 volume! This obviously alarmed me because this amp should not be bottoming out this sub. I have the gain set to a 1/3, which is where it should be for a 2 ohm load.
My questions are:
-How much power might the sub be seeing at .5 ohm if the amp is rated at 750rms @ 2 ohms?
-If the amp doesn't get hot, am I still damaging the components?
I will check the coils with a DMM (if I can remember how) and re-post later today.
Thanks!
