kicker 600.1 struggling to power on...?

Hey guys,

I got a Pioneer head unit, 6400

Kicker 600.1, Kicker comp Vrs (2)

I have had the head unit for 4+ years.

I have had the amp/sub combo for 3+ years.

In the past 6 months my amp has been struggling to turn on when I turn my car on.

When everything works, my amp obviously turns on with I turn my key, the kicker light glows and the little green led saying the power source is good is lit. THis happens about half the time.

In recent months sometimes when I start my truck, the kicker like will glow, then go off, litterally flicker on then off as well as the red/green led combo which will flick back and forth accordingly. Usually there will be no power for 5 or so seconds, followed by a half a second of power, then back off for 5 or so seconds, this continues until it powers fully, any where from 1 minute, to 5 or so maybe more.

I have checked voltages at the remote line, power line battery etc, everything seems fine and doesnt seem to spike as the amp is struggling to turn on.

I want to say a wire is loose somewhere, but then it just turns on and works fine.

Any ideas?

power supply is going out on the amplifier
dang, pretty sure of that?

When this started happening I called kicker and they didnt mention anything like that. Being this old do you think I could RMA it and send it in for repair and pay a difference or something? I havent delt with kicker for years, kinda forget how thier customer service is.

check for loose connections....
where at?

I have checked the connections at the amp, battery, head unit (remote)

Can't get to the ground at college, dont have the tools to get my seat off.

If it was the ground being loose, would you get this effect? Why wouldnt it just never turn on, as opposed to sometimes working fine, sometimes flickering on then off then on.

?

thanks for the help so far, i appreciate it.

The ground needs to have a sturdy connection to complete the power flow, if it is not connected properly, it could cause moments in time where the circuit is completed and when it is not, leading to the on/off effect. I would try to rule that out and then call Kicker. I have heard they have some rough customer service at times but give it a shot, all they can say is no. And if they do, KBaudio does great work so I hear.

Ill see if i can get a hold of some tools to check that ground out.

KB audio looks nice if thats what it comes too, sure hope its something else though.

thanks for the help so far, any other ideas?

Well if it is infact only a bad power supply, KBaudio should be able to replace it for fairly cheap, so I dont think that would be such a bad option.

im starting to think that is the problem.

I have noticed more and more that if I haven't drive in a day, that it flickers on and off longer before it finally gets going.

For instance today I drove to classes, first time since early sunday. It took a few minutes to get going. After my first class it was a little bit quicker in starting up. Since then its taken seconds to fire up and most of the time since I have been in and out quite a few times, it has turned right on.

Is a bad power supply a common problem, could i get more information on it somewhere? I havent searched these forums, but I will give that a try after my test.

thanks for the help so far, i really appreciate it.

question dan... when it powers up, does the kx600.1 light on the top of the amp go bright and then dim a few times before it really kicks in...?? if so then yes, it is the power supply, I would NOT... I repeat NOT get a new version of the kx amps, IMO the older ones like you say you have.. well, they have a little more power than the new ones... I had the exact setup u do... I first had a new KX 600.1 and it did the same thing, within a week... power supply died on me, I put in an 02 version of the same amp, and it sounded way better at the same settings... and lasted till I sold them about 6 months later...

well, anyway, IMO I say get it fixed... it's cheaper to have someone other than manufatures fix them... and they fix them just as well...

*(never throw away/break old amps, decks, eq's, anything that is blown up, it's cheaper and better to save them and get them fixed...)*

The kicker light will be on for a split second and then off for 10 seconds, then back on until it totally powers up.

i would rather get it fixed, but am not totally against buying again. what are some good sites and amps to look at with in reasonable price range 3-400?

in your area, I'm not sure, myself and a friend of mine fix and diagnose amps and things around my area...

1 more thing dan, try something for me, unhook your rca's and sub wires... if it is still doing it after you have nothing but the power ground remote hooked up to the amp, then I am 100% sure it's the power supply...
