Kenwood USB questions

I am getting ready to install my Kenwood KDC-X791 and I have a question. Is anyone using a portable hard drive with any of the kenwood models? I thinking about using a 30GB hard drive but I don't know if I need to power it with an additional power supply or not. The external enclosure I purchased has a Y usb cable so I guess you can plug it into two usb ports if needed. My question is how would an additional cigarette lighter to usb power supply work with the other side of the cable hooked to the kenwood unit? I would think the two power sources would feed into each usb socket or are the external drives smart enough to know how to work the two inputs. Is anyone using a setup like this? For all I know the additional supply won't even be needed as the hard drive itself shows +5V .5A current draw, which would meet USB specifications. Any advise would be appreciated.

I thought i would reply to my own question incase someone comes across this in a search. I used a Rosewill 2.5" enclosure, and a 30GB hard drive out of an old Toshiba laptop. I only needed a single cable, it powers up quick and sorts all my 3,000 files in less than 15 seconds. I am really happy with how it functions except for my songs are in alphabeticall order inside my folders. Not too hard to find what I want though. I wish this feature would have been out 10 years ago.
