Kenwood MASK help

I purchased a kenwood head unit (KDC-7009) back in '98. It was one of the first omdels with the M.A.S.K. self flipping faceplate. Cool feature. Fast forward to a couple days ago when it no longer rotates to on. It is stuck in the "hidden" or off position. The only other piece of info. I can add is that the faceplate is not firmly seated against the unit. The top of the plate, while hidden, is sticking out a few millimeters and is loose when pressed on. Anyone out there have or hear of a similar situation and potentially a way I could reset or fix this problem without servicing it? If no, then anyone know what kenwood or authorized service centers have charged to fix this problem?
