I tried hooking up a hard drive through the usb port on this head unit and it keeps saying usb device error. It gives me the same message when i hook up a flash drive with movies. I'm wondering if the disk or movies themselve have to be in a certain format or if the headunit is just not capable of playing movies off a flash drive or handling a hard drive. Any help would be appreciated.

so if i buy a portable hard drive and format it in fat would it be able to read it?
it explains all this in the owners manual man. exact details about formats, drive size, etc. you should probably check it out.

The max volume size for fat is 4gb. It would not be to your advantage to format a hard drive for this purpose but IF you did, yes it would work. It can't tell the difference between a flash drive and a hard drive other than the seek time.
