Kenwood Excelon KDC-x494 Crossover

So I am considering getting the above mentioned HU. It says that it has a built in crossover that allows you to choose the frequency independently for the front and rear outputs. My plan was to get an active crossover, but they aren't exactly cheap. Could I just use the units built in crossover instead? Would that still work as an active crossover? Thanks for any help.
