i drive an 06 silverado extended cab with stock audio. i owned a system years ago when i drove a tahoe and could afford to drop the money. now i cant afford to drop the money but i'm going to try and put a system in the truck. i am currently readin up on things and trying to do my research so i do not have to rely on yall for everything. although i'll appreciate all opnions.

i went to a shop today for a quote... i'm not sure on the exact models but he said i could get two memphis or JL 10"s.. (cheapest new model i presume).. those would run me 160.00 .. the apm would be (yet again i'm not sure on the exact model) either a memphi or an alpine for 199.00 .. i believe they were 500 watts.

well after they build the boxes (they were gonna build 2 indivudual boxes) and run the wires and everything it was gonna come out to $680. is this decent or should i try and pull if off cheaper online and pay someone to hook it up?

sorry about the lack on information.. i'm just guessing everything he tried to sell me was this years model but the cheapest model.

Doesn't sound decent to me.

You can have someone on the forum build you a really nice enclosure and that'll open up your budget for nicer equipment. Installing the stuff isn't as difficult as you probably think either. There are step by step tutorials that cover pretty much anything & everything you'd need to know...

Don't buy anything yet, man. Do some reading and see what actual car audio guys are using. Familiarize yourself with quality gear and read some tutorials. You'll have at least a decent idea of how to do things for yourself in no time.

ok now i'm having all types of confusing thoughts.. now i'm wondering if i should stick with the two 10s that would be with.. i assume sealed boxes or go with a single 10 or 12 of higher quality in a ported box

For a shop installed price that's not bad. Pro installed has it's advantages that are worth paying a little extra for. The gear sounds okay. You certainly could do a lot better if you bought the gear online, built your own box and installed yourself.

If you want to take the time to learn to do it your self then you can not only save money, but you can get better gear. If your not going to learn and just want it now, then go for the shop.

The only thing I would add is PLEASE get a set of comps and an amp to power them for the front and installed well. I would suggest you spend less on the sub and shift some of your budget to front speakers and stereo amp for them.

The world doesn't need another ghetto boom box with no decent front sound.

I would suggest hanging around the forums for a bit before you jump into it. Since it sounds like this isn't your first system, you may already have the basics covered, and are just a step away of doing it yourself. All depends on what you're comfortable with.

You're going to get a ton of opinions and ultimately its going to be your decision anyhow.. no need to rush! You'll probably want to start with where you want to put everything. Trunk/Hatch/Bed/Behind seats/Under seats. Determine what you can fit, and how much room you're willing to sacrifice. Under the seats, you'll probably have to get a prefab box (one designed for your vehicle), and you're best bet might be thru the install shop/search the internet. If you're going with behind the seats, or anything else you can measure the area and have a box built for pretty cheap, or do it yourself, even cheaper and more fun.. Ported/sealed is going to depend on where the box and sub(s) are going to be, so make that decision first. Amp(s) and sub(s) you can find a lot of info on the forums. Now all you need is wiring and fuse holders/fuses.

So, in a nutshell, hold off for a min and figure out what it is you really want.

i'm definitely not jumping into this.. i dont have a lot of money so i dont throw down 700 bucks mindlessly i do my research. the only place i can put the speakers is under the seat since it's an extended cab truck. but now i have to decide if i want one or two subs.. and if i get them do i want them firing down or two the front. this isn't something that will happen in the next week. it'll prolly be a few weeks before i can get this started because if i'm broke i want to at least have a decent sound.. and not broke with a shit system.. thanks for all the quick replies fellas keep them comin

ok so i've made a couple of decisions. i'm going to go with 2-10's firing downward below my back seat. i found one pre fab for 170 (shipping included) that has .95 cf per unit made with 3/4 mdf. another one has .92 cf made with 5/9 mdf but is 40 bucks cheaper...

is it worth the $40 to get the better box or will i tell a difference? my thoughts are to spend decent money on a box and amp.. get cheaper subs and later on get nicer subs.. what are your thoughts?

oh and one more thing. when i've called and talked to shops around town they say that since i have a stock head unit i'll have to have some extra wiring unit that is pretty pricey added.. would it be best to just shell out 100 bucks for a lower end HU and avoid this small cost (about 50$ i think)

bullshit...you can put a LOC on anything for sub outputs. They cost $15 at walmart. You don't have to get rid of your stock head unit. All you need to do is get at signal output from one speaker for sub output. You could easily jumper some wires from one of your door speakers, run it under the floor and then to the LOC, then run an RCA cable to your amp and blammo...cheap fix.

If I was you, id buy a used amp on here. Maybe subs too if you can find someone selling a pair of 10's on the cheap. That's what Id do if I was on a budget.

Luckily, I don't know what a budget is for my jeep //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

haha.. yeah i talked to another place.. i was confused about that extra HU piece.. it's only like 15 bucks all around town..

went to another shop and after telling them what i wanted.. (quality with some good bass to listen to all types of music) they gave me three options for my extended cab

option 1- $630 (includes all extra parts with labor)

amp- JBL GTO 3501

subs- JBL-4.. (12s)

option 2 - $690

amp- alpine MRP-M500

subs- JBL GT-4 (12s)

option 3-$770

amp JBL GTO 700.1 (12s)

subs- JBL GT5

everything comes with a year long warranty.. no matter what happens they'll fix and/or replace.. and if i ever wanna upgrade they will buy back their shit at 70% of what i paid for it.

this all seems pretty good and it's nice to know that they will fix it for free. which one.. if any would yall choose?

i found all the stuff online for option number three and getting it online would only save me 50 bucks.. which to me isn't worth the wait or the hassel of "what if something messes up"
