jvc kd-ar7000 smoking

i have had this head unit for about three years took it out when i had to replace a speedometer ignition is off i plug it in and right away it starts smoking out the back of it so i unplugged it any clue what would cause this?

Either it was time for that unit to die (though what an unfortunate way to find out //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif) or you crossed some wires when you pulled it out and something shorted to ground would be my first guess(es)
