A Canadian man who was celebrating his anniversary with his wife in Honduras was killed as he tried to save her from muggers, an AIDS non-profit group said Sunday.
Dallas Martens of Martensville, Sask., was out with his wife, Krissy, on Friday when he was shot and killed, according to an update posted on the Morgan Jayne Project website.
The couple had pulled into a road to look at a home, the report said.
As they got out of their car two hooded and armed gunmen ran from the side of the house and grabbed Krissy. Dallas put his body between his wife and the gunman and he was shot three times. He died instantly.
The muggers grabbed Krissy's purse and fled, the report said.
The Martens had sold everything they had and moved to the island of Roatan in Honduras in July. They were set to adopt a baby, whom they had met when volunteering on the island last December.
"Consular officials are aware of a Canadian involved in an incident in Honduras," Foreign Affairs spokesman Alain Cacchione said Sunday in an e-mail.
"The Canadian representative in Honduras has been notified and is looking into the matter. Due to the Privacy Act, I will provide no further information at this time."
Martens had been involved with the Morgan Jayne Project, an organization dedicated to fighting the AIDS epidemic on Roatan island, mainly through reducing the transmission of the virus between mother and child. The group provides counselling, testing and assistance for families living with AIDS. The organization also assists in placing children who cannot be cared for by their mothers into homes of Honduran residents.
Project organizers are raising funds for the capture of the gunman.
