if its XP and instead of getting avatars with pretty pictures and such at log-in, it gives you the generic "hit ctrl alt del to log in," sounds like a business laptop. Further supporting the stolen computer theory and why you seem to have very little info on it and have not posted anything usefull... (Brand, Model, etc)

Also, sounds like your story changed... I mean I read through the first few pages but doesn't make sense. First it was EBay, then friends X wife. I could have missed something, but don't think so.

These are all assumptions so I could be wrong. but more then likely, in that configuration, its a business computer. It probably has all low end parts, wont play any games well, and will cost you money to fix. The information on it 90% is worth nothing to you, but is irreplaceable to the person it came from. Do the world a favor and return it. Its probably destroying someones life.
