Just a warning to all you who use torrents...

A few weeks ago a kid at my school got busted for sharing music. The school got a letter from the RIAA about it. Idk whatever happened with it though.

I stray from dowloading anything other than ****. SO, could some educate me on torrents. I see them, but like I said I dont D/L.

I ripp DVDs, but i dont sell them...

Technology allows someone to shoot me in the head. Does that mean they should be allowed to?
Technology allows someone to steal my identity. Does that mean they should be allowed to?

Technology allows someone to break into a house with a security alarm, does that mean they should be allowed to?

Technology can allow terrorists to hack into our government's computer networks, does that mean they should be allowed to?

Just because a technology advances that allows or aids someone in performing illegal activities, certainly does not mean that the activity should therefore be made legal. That's just assinnine.

The material is copyrighted, plain and simple. Whether or not a technology is invented to circumvent the law doesn't matter. It's still illegal in this country.
Don't do that. You know I didn't mean it in that context. That a way to take my statement and smear it all over my face like dog poo. Heehee //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

Thats an extreme opposing view. But thats the benefit of technology. You can do stuff you couldnt do before. In this case its d/l ing. Not murder.... You're comparing apples to petroleum.

It doesn't matter the crime. The law is the law, and breaking it is breaking it.

And in only one example did I mention murder //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

i think if you download something like Battle Royale, shouldnt get caught...
That is an awesome movie. I don't download, I get movies from blockbuster on their unlimited movies plan, and rip //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

My good friend just got busted on campus for downloading a torrent of a movie from torrentspy.com. The letter explained that he was infringing copyrights by sharing the movie via the torrent, even though he downloaded a few MB's and then stopped it. For those of you who know how torrents work, you'll know why he got busted.
He got his internet shut off for an undetermined amount of time, but since this was his first time, there's no disciplinary action taking place through the University.

Just a fair warning that the MPAA IS out there and watching, and be careful what you download. (Brand new movies are a NO-NO!!)
Happened to my friend too, got his internet shut off for a month and he had to go to some lecture with other pirates. Arggg. Funny thing was, they accused him of downloading a certain movie that he never did, although he did download plenty of other ones.

so what , none of these people get in any financial trouble from these companies?
Its pretty much just a warning to get out to the masses, AKA "scare tactic". I have heard of people who are charged and fined, but not locally. Another friend of mine downloaded/shared Windows XP and got an academic suspension. I think it depends on who is willing to press charges for single offenses.
