Just a warning to all you who use torrents...

My good friend just got busted on campus for downloading a torrent of a movie from torrentspy.com. The letter explained that he was infringing copyrights by sharing the movie via the torrent, even though he downloaded a few MB's and then stopped it. For those of you who know how torrents work, you'll know why he got busted.

He got his internet shut off for an undetermined amount of time, but since this was his first time, there's no disciplinary action taking place through the University.

Just a fair warning that the MPAA IS out there and watching, and be careful what you download. (Brand new movies are a NO-NO!!)

**** the MPAA.
+1
I am a true believer that if technology allows somebody to do something, then it should be allowed whether or not the supplier of the information (in this case movie) likes it.

The copyright thing is bullshit because nobody is profiting off of it. Its just like borrowing a movie from a friend. Is that illegal too? No!

Yep happened to me last semester.

For downloading of all things.....

Zelda 64 rom

Some group like the esa or some sh!t like that.

I coulda made a big deal out of it and said it was a backup but I didnt care that much.

The mechanics of torrents and campus networks make this tough to swallow;

A torrent comes from multiple hosts; The RIAA or whoever would have to host the file to obtain the IP address of clients requesting the download.

Campus networks typically are dynamic IP, DHCP based networks, whereas your IP address is assigned by the router, not the actual internet pipeline. The downline assigns the router an ip address, and the router assigns the user one. In order to identify which terminal was using a particular address, (which by the way should change with every DHCP lease,) , etc blah I"m done explaining.

Technology allows someone to shoot me in the head. Does that mean they should be allowed to?

Technology allows someone to steal my identity. Does that mean they should be allowed to?

Technology allows someone to break into a house with a security alarm, does that mean they should be allowed to?

Technology can allow terrorists to hack into our government's computer networks, does that mean they should be allowed to?

Just because a technology advances that allows or aids someone in performing illegal activities, certainly does not mean that the activity should therefore be made legal. That's just assinnine.

The material is copyrighted, plain and simple. Whether or not a technology is invented to circumvent the law doesn't matter. It's still illegal in this country.
