Jug vs eD A vs RE XXX

If flat and conical cones move the same amount of air...then why arent they all flat? Oh yeah, and to the person who somehow thought that a bowl shaped cone means you cant calculate surface area cause its "3-d", your wayyyyy off. You can still calculate a falt surface area of a spherical shape. Anyway enough about the arguing, more surface area equals more air moved, its as simple as that. And a bowl has mroe surface area, it doesnt matter. Diameter matters, but if it is the same for both subs, the sub will the most total surface area should be louder, as long as it isnt some extermly deep bowl shaped sub. A certain amount of a curve will increase the amoutn of air moved. PERIOD

The surface area does not assist radiating area, for the last time.

Put sub X and sub Y in a 12 foot long, 12" diameter tube. One cone is flat, the other is conical.

Move them 2mm forward and you get..........?

2mm of that tubes net volume is displaced. The conical driver's extra surface area did what? NOTHING.

Move them all the way to the end of the tube? What happens?

...........................................................................................................

The entire tube volume has been displaced. The volume of air inside the cone? STILL THERE. It's called wasted space. That is all it is.

It's just wasted volume, it's just airspace between the diaphragm and the actual effective area that it'll displace.

Who said you can't calculate it? All that was said was area is two dimensional, you know, "length times width", units squared, "pi times r-squared".

Here's a picture for you...

thanks for the illustration

you can always put something into my preschooler perspective so that i can understand it along w/ everyone else //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

and if i wanted to start picking fights on here i doubt jlaine would be my first match up....just a thought :thumbsdow

Just so I answer an ealier question, it'd be a daily driver. Probably, I'd be sending about 1600watts to it, RMS. So, to introduce yet another question: does the driver with the highest xmax generally mean more SPL? Or, would less xmax but more power equate to (my ultimate goal) the deepest bass? I mean, we're talking frequencies 50Hz and below; cause those are the ones that put on a good show.

This is my physics majors opinion in the 2 min before i have to go to class

look at the picture.

The sub moves in the y direction

Its like calculating forces. You only add components in the same direction. The flat cone has the same amount going up as the other cone.

~edit ok thought about it more. This is calculating forces: Now even if the x component of the cone pushed air somehow it would be canceled out because the cone is an identical circle. Therefore it doesnt matter at all.

g2g im late

~edit ****it i was late and the worst part is it was for modern physics. Dagnabit and we were doing lorentz transformations.

I like this guy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rotflol.gif.b453361716769b8110ddefc85ff03cd2.gif

By the way, is there something against the brahma? I'm running a 1200 watt amp to mine, with the gains set at 1/2. I can hardly be in the car with the volume up. You feel like your ear innards are bleeding out in a mushy gush of mucus. I really need to know, how many of you have actually heard any of these subs?

what u mean these subs?...oh bumpindoug...dude....ok if theres 2 people i wouldnt want to argue with..jlaine and loyd would be them.hmm an adire audio dealer and a world record holder...i think theyd know their shit..wouldnt you?you dont get x amount of world records by not knowing about flat vs cone....no matter how much u think u know...theres always smarter people.ask anyone in this forum what they think of jlaine's smartness...9out10(the other 1 would be stupid)would say he knows his **** shit man.just letting you know...dont pick fights w/ them...they smurt :p

How does the Kicker 18inch subwoofer compare to the XXX or some of the other subs listed here ?
its got a 5kw rms rating...its got the highest db hit for any single woofer(i think?????)uhm its 100lbs..its up there w/ 9917 csx18.its called the solox btw.the solox would take a 18xxx just because of pure power handling and cone area of 18% more...although that doesnt always matter...i think a solox could take most w/ right install.

Well someone has to keep them from thinking they've turned into gods //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

NO! Ive got it, and I did the math on this one! I am right, not to say that your not knowledgable cause Im sure you are....but follow me on this casue Ive got a real easy way to understand this. Ok lets say that the whole cone on both subs moved the same distance (even though obviously the innner part moves more than the outside...but bear with me). Now the flat cone will displace any of the air that was currently occupying the space it moved into, and so would the bowl shaped cone. Therefore all of the air occupying the space where the cone jus moved into is porjected forward...which is how the sound is produced. Now if a bowl shaped cone is moved foward, it will displace all of the air occupied by the space it enters, which would be more becasue it has a larger surface area to it. The flat sub will also move all of the air that its cone moves into....which will displace less air than the conical cone because it has less surface area. And that is why a conical cone displaces more air then a flat cone when it moves...going by laws of physics that has to be true, I had a talk with my pshyics prof. about this yesterday
