oay seeing as how we are getting madd info here. What would eb a safe Gain setting for a 400watt max 12" Pioneer on a bridged 400 watt Pioneer amp? I play my volume @ moderate levels.

see that what i ment by underpowering a sub if you have a amp that cant do what you want and you try to get the best out of the amp but yet your really damaging the sub and the amp that what i ment by underpowering it you drive the amp past distortion and the sub gets ditorted then you end up blowing the voice coil cause of the ditortion i know about gain control i dont use mine the only time i use it is on my hi's which you have to turn the gain up on your hi's a little bit but far as sub wise i dont do that and i limit my volume by watching my eq i have a era g320 alpine eq and it tells you when your going over the limit so its a pretty cool feature in that eq but i have a memphis 1000d and i dont use the remote gain control to me it makes your subs sound like crap but thanks for the help i should have been a little bit more detailed by what i ment

The same could apply with overpowering though too. Distortion and Clipping is harmful to speakers regaurdless of power. So underpowering would not cause damage in any way shape or form on its own. The person on the gain and volume control causes the damage. As I said- user error.

take it easy,

best way to set the gain is to turn the sterio up to about 3/4 volume and turn the gain up till you start to hear distortion....then back it off a little now your gain is set for close to maximum volume level....good luck

i think 1/2 the people here will dissagree with you bro.. jl makes good subs.. and JL OFFERS A 3 YEAR WARRANTY.. YOU CAN SEND THOSE PUPPYS BACK ALL YOU WANT.. FOR 3 YEARS.. CAN'T BEAT THAT BRO.. go get some more.. and don't ****ing blow them up : )
I know this is an EXTREMELY old thread, but I was searching through the most replied threads and saw that you mentioned JL gives a 3 year warranty. I have the 12W7, but I think they said on their site you only get a one year warranty?

sup....well im new here...i have a question... im interested in purchasing sum jl's.... from n e body... im looking for a pair of either W6AE/ or a pair of W7... i know the w7's are more expensive but if i can get a price quote on both i would really appriciate it.....thanks
