Got a JL 500/1 pushing a 12" Type-R Dual 4 right now, it sounds nice, but it's not really enough thump. I'm looking to get a 15", looking at the IDQ Dual 4 or the 15" Type-R. The mag seems to be out of my price range (~150-250$)

I see that the IDQ is rated 600w RMS, but I think I read somewhere saying it can be wired to 1 ohm and pushing more watts to it, but the JL isn't 1ohm stable. Since the JL is underrated, I suppose it is pushing more than 500w, gonna guess close to the 600. Good match with the IDQ?

Changing amps isn't really an option for me. I am using a custom made harness to bypass my factory amp, and it sents out balanced signals, and only JL Audio, and a few Rockford Fosgate & Kicker amps have this Balanced Differential Input feature.

Will be making a custom ported box looking something like this (don't have all the measurements, but it should be something like 3ft L x 2ft W x 2ft H, with a little indentation on half of it since I have a navi unit in the way. Looking something like this. Will probably have the sub firing up and port towards the back of the car.

______ navi unit

Also open to suggestions.

Note: JL 500/1 is stable between 1.5 - 4ohm.

just get a dual 4 ohm and wire it to 2 ohms, or a dual 2 ohm sub and wire it to 4 ohms. it will get the same power either way
But a 500/1 pushing a rated 600w rms 15" should be good? Or would it be underpowered, seeing how i see many of you putting alot more than its rated rms since it can take the beating.

You wont be underpowering it by that much, it will still get moving. Sounds like a decent match.

But if you could switch to one of those higher powered kicker or rockford amps it might a b bit louder.

Still I think it will work alright. If your not satisfied you always got 2 options.

Put the same 12 back on, or a get a diff amp

I'd try it tho.

update:

getting plans for a custom ported with the correct tuning in my limited spaced trunk got too confusing, so i was able to do a little bit of measurement and I can fit a 16x16x16 sealed in my trunk before it reachs the navi unit, giving me 1.54cubes, which is only 0.01cu under suggested spec, so it should work perfectly.

just ordered the 15" idq from spy he should be shipping it today. pics to come soon!
