JL 500/1 and two 8w7's or one 8w7

I'm trying to decide on either getting one 8w7 or two 8w7's. They are rated at 300 watts rms and the 500/1 jl audio amp is rated at 500 watts rms. Would I be safe with one or two subs? I'm getting out of straight spl so I want spl/sq. I'll port the box. Are JL amps underrated? If so do you think it'll put out 600 watts? If so I would be fine with two subs I think. Oh and my voltage system is 14.4. Thanks guys.

Yes you should be fine with 2 8w7's on the 500/1. That amp rocks.

i have heard of people putting a 1000/1 on two 8's... i am sure they can take more than the rated power. but the 500/1 should work pretty well for those subs.

I would say go with something higher than an 8.... I was running a 12 in a ported box off a 500/1 and it was **** loud. I haven't heard the 8's though.

Put two on there. You'll get comfertably loud assumeing its a good install and you dont have to give a sub RMS to get loud.

the amp actualy puts out more power then what is rated. while still keeping distortion to a very low level.

go with the two 8W7's in a ported box "built right" they should be nice and loud, while still getting low. that amp will rock them.

I'd do just a single 8W7. That subwoofer can handle more than what the conservative RMS rating states.

If I was in your shoes, I'd go with one. You can always add another later if you feel the need to, but just see how one sounds to begin with.

AllStar1500bd, you do have a point. I have thought about what your thinking. Mabye one 8w7 will do the trick. The only down fall is if im not happy then I'll have to fork out more money on a custom box.

if youre going to be using the 500/1 amp and want to get your moneys worth, then you want to be able to push it to its limits, i dont mean gains set all the way up, just use the wattage that the amp can actualy put out. lets say that the 8w7 can actualy handle a little more the 300wrms lets say 450wrms. youre now pushing the sub and risking killing it and or getting audible distortion. and youre still not using the most out of your amp.

if you can afford the 2 8w7 go for it. the subs will run cooler, youll avoid distortion from over powering them, and youll get louder and lower bass. the amp will push them just right. with no problems. i have a 500/1 and pushed it to its max and still held together no over heating and no audible distortion. that amp rocks. so if you have the air space for the 2 sub in your vehicle. go for 2. youll be happy at the end.
