SQ Baby!
Ok I posted this in the Amplifier section but it seems more people hang out in here so here i go //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I plan on running to older models of the A series Elemental Designs subs, the discontinued ones and are 500W RMS each I think, so total of 1000W RMS and planned on using a JBL1200.1 @ 1 ohm, I was wonderin about problems people have had using the amp at a 1 ohm load or succesful, whatever, just need some input on what kind of things might happen running it at 1 ohm for daily use.

yeah i know you said for the 1200.1 owners only, but i thought id step in and help out anyway //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

for your question...it will do it without breaking a sweat. itll draw quite a bit of current if you get it going...i think somewhere in the neighborhood of 140 amps...if you max it out at 1 ohm, but you should be alright, as it probably wouldnt draw too much power normally.

I got a 1995 Ford Taurus 3.8L V6 So if anyone knows what kind of amp my alternator has that would be helpful //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

This is me calling bullshit on Nismo, so watchout!

I talked to the guys at JBL extensively when I first bought this amp asking what i should and shouldn't do to it.

1. CLAIM: This amp will never draw more than 100a, no matter what.

PROOF: I have a 90a fuse in my line that goes to my 1200.1. It's been there since the day I installed the amp, and it's never popped. I've run it at both 2 and 1 ohms, wide open quite a few times, and it's never popped that fuse. The amp doesn't gain any power from one ohm to two ohm, so it only draws about 10a of additional current.

2. Claim: Running this amp in one ohm mode will get it hot.

PROOF: I ran my 1200.1 in 1ohm @ about 2v of gain (a little less than half) and it got untouchably hot after about 30 mins of use. It never popped a fuse (internally or in the line) but it got hot enough for me to worry about it and turn it off. If you're only ******* about 800-900w out of it in one ohm mode, it may not get hot, but when you're pushing it to the limits, it will get hot, i promise.

I emailed JBL tech service a while back, and here's the reply I got with my questions included. If you want to challenge me, call or email JBL and ask them the same questions.

I just purchased a JBL BP1200.1 car amplifier. I have a few questions I'd

like to ask before installing it.

1. How many amperes does this amp need to draw from the electrical system

to reach full potential at 2 ohms? 90 Amps

2. If I plan to run the amp to its fullest potential, can I use 4awg wire

from the battery to the dist. block, and then 8awg from the block to the

amp? Will this cause "bottlenecking"? Nope, no bottle necking. What you have suggested will work fine.

This is me calling bullshit on you, for calling bullshit on Nismo... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I've personally tested FOUR different 1200.1's.. on a stock, or somewhat stock charging systems... at 1 ohm* try around 160-165 amps to deliver around 1460 watts... (this is with a sagging drop of voltage to 12.7-13.0 volts) At 2 ohm*, with the same charging system, it takes around 85-95 amps to reach 1340 watts... (voltage drop wasn't as bad... granted)

Your fuse didnt pop because fuses can withstand current levels up to 200% of their rating, for several seconds....

I also have to mention that current draw is reactive to impedence... so unless you test with an impedence you know.. Like I did... you cant say with any certainty, what the load was on the amp, or the current draw...

JBL techs claim the current draw, while using a giant 14volt STABLE power supply.. which is a bit optimistic.. to say the least.. They are close on the 2 ohm rating.. but completely off with a 1 ohm load...

Loyd L.

* = I used Linear X PCrta to run an impedence sweep, to find the actual load at the above state nominal impedences... they were 2.6 ohm, and 4.9 ohm respectively..

you smell funny...

P.s. no hard feeling LoneRanger... Im not out to hate you to death or anything.. I gotta stick up for my boy though.. esp when he's close to being right.. I have no doubt the JBL guys told you everything you said they did... But never trust anybody in caraudio that is in a posistion to sell you anything...
