There is a lot of elitism, which I guess I'm guilty of from time to time as well. But some of these posts are horrendously jaded. If people really love music, then they should be able to appreciate other people's tastes for music. You're allowed to have your opinion on whether it's good or not, but that doesn't mean the other person is necessarily wrong.
I agree on Top 40 stuff. But these people aren't dedicated to music like we are, so they are just interested in what has been played for them. It's the same reason people only care about causes or issues the media reports on.
The following post was so stupid I had to respond.
Music in general isnt like it used to be. Its all about advertising and promotions.
Music hasn't changed. The big label recording industry has. There is tons of good music out there that you're probably just not aware of.
Ever been to a concert that wasnt sponsored by some big company? Payed off by some corporation? Just used to promote the radio station and or venue it takes place at?
Someone has to pay the bills and get their name out there. It's free enterprise at it's finest.
Another concert for the ages is never going to happen again, for example Woodstock 69'. Guess what, it wasnt sponsored by Miller Lite, Hot Pockets, or any other gay company. It was a show that promoted music and the people who love it.
Have you ever talked to someone who was at Woodstock 69? I have. Several people. They all thought it was absolute shit. A terribly organized concert with drug users out of control everywhere (think Abbie Hoffman). It was a concert that promoted a "scene" (much like the scene you complain about later in your post).
Now the only thing people listen to is that garbage like Panic at the Disco, Brand New, Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, The Killers, The Academy Is, Paramore, and any other band with a bunch of "guys" dancing around in womens pants and eye liner singing lyrics that are almost as indecisive as reading the lines of a Shakespeare poem.
I guess the more complicated, confusing, encoded, and generally dumb your lyrics are, the more you love music. Its almost as if the more confusing the better. This isnt poerty. You're 5'6, wearing skin tight jeans, eye liner, and can only play power chords.
If you have a problem with people like that, you need to re-evaluate the entire music industry. You want people dressed in women's clothing wearing eye-liner? I can give you MAJOR contributors over the last 30-40 years who've been doing it for a long time. Not just in the 80's during glam metal, either. Think Bowie, Jagger, Mercury, etc. The fact that you think these bands are without talent is mindblowing.
That music is garbage. Dammit it pisses me off. The whole "scene" thing where you list every emo "alternative" band you like in your Music section on Myspace is just retarded.
None of what you just listed is emo. Like most people, you have no idea what emo is but you use it as some sort of derogatory attack when there's really nothing wrong with it.
"Music is my life!!!!" Apparently not. You cant play any intruments, explain the basic structure of music composition, the basics of music theory, and you cant read music. Music doesnt mean shit to you. The only thing that matters to you is following the lead of your friends, who followed their friends. You all try to be "different" and "alternative", but you all wear the same stupid pants, same gay makeup, same retarded band shirts, and listen to the same exact music. Go make up your own mind on what you like. Dont be so different that you are the same... Along with everyone else that you go to your stupid concerts with.
Yeah, they are the same as 5% of the other people. Just because you see more of them still does not mean they are even close to how the majority of people dress. And forget about that for a moment: these are kids you moron! They've been like that for as long as there have been teenagers. They will follow the trends just like everyone else and grow out of it down the road. It's no different than several generations before but somehow you still think you're better than them because of how they dress or what music they listen to. Give me a ****ed break.
Just because someone doesn't know how to write music or play an instrument doesn't mean that it is less important to them. That's what "music is my life" means. If they said "I'm a musician" then I would agree with you, but that's not what they said. Being able to play an instrument may enhance your appreciation of it, but not everyone is capable of doing so; that doesn't make the importance of music in their lives any less significant.
And whats the deal with these kids who are "punk" going to local shows their radio station puts on? I thought the idea was to stick it to the man? Not spend $45/ticket to get into a show put on by ClearChannel Corporation? And to take it a step further they buy the CD the local radio station puts out that is sponsored by some stupid corporation looking to advertise to a younger demographic. Then they buy the stupid $25 shirt, sold by the corporation that is putting on the show.
Yeah, thats real punk.
It's called supporting a band and enjoying music. There are practically zero situations now where you can legally enjoy music while sticking it to the man. So what...they should just give up listening to music, going to concerts, or wearing t-shirts of their favourite band?
Wow, that was quite the rant, sorry.
At least you apologized.
