im no geek or nerd, but for those of you who are,//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

a scammer could set up 2 (or more) accounts on 1 forum right? rack up a healthy post count and then scam someone out of $1000 plus.

can we identify who is who and who is genuine, by checking internet service providers or something?

any ideas?

Yes, there is a way to check ISP addresses for the various people posting on the forum and as well an ability to crosscheck usernames against those ISPs. It's a tool available to the moderation team.

Try slowing down a bit and typing English next time as your last statement looks more than a bit like gibberish //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif.

read it again and decipher it for a supprise //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

They could be using a proxy, and just because two IP addresses share the same ISP, it doesn't mean they're the same person.
but its a clue right?

so if someone is useing a proxy its more likely they are a scammer, cos peeps who have

nothing to hide dont need proxyies.

so mods can help protect us by insisting membership requires not useing a proxy?
you cant tell if someone is using a proxy or not, its a simpl feature in most browsers...

unless the proxy gives you a ugoslavian or chechynian or whatever then theres no way to tell if there using a proxy.. there are many proxies in the united states hosted by privet internet companies that honor their privacy policy which are tenured to cyber crimes and whatnot... but the good ones usually cost money //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

not that i do that sort of thing of course, i just like to read up on that stuff

Just for the record. The hidden surprise is "hardcoresound" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif I have nothing to do with this, I'm just good at brainteasers.

he tried pretty hard to get me to send $730 to him,

when i obviously wasnt a fool he dissappeard.

buyers beware.

For the moderators it would be nearly impossible for them to keep scammers out completely. There are some tools out there that will greatly help them out tho. If someone has their IP hidden or ran through a proxy (this is not common, people mistake NAT for Proxy 99% of the time) it is very difficult to trace. In my last job we had someone who tried to hijack his way into our infrastructure about 10 times over a 2 week period. This certain person did actually run a Proxy server that he appearently coded himself (wayyyyy too much time). Anyway in order for us to catch him we had to call in Law Inforcement and get a court order for us to actually try to catch him. It only took 3 hours after this point for us (by us I mean people alot smarter than myself) to track down his real ip/isp. Then it got alot easier. Needless to say it was a pain in the *** and I never even got to see or hear who it was. Just that he has been arrested and is still awaiting trial.

So I guess the answer to your question is no, not entirely. Every so often you will get someone this is just too **** smart....but alot of the time it is just someone that thinks they are, and those are the tools that you can catch.
