is xmax everything

When going ported, the majority of the pressure comes from the port. So with that said, do you really think Xmax from the sub is the most important factor? Maybe what you should be trying to do is create a box with very good port speed (rounded off corners, flared ports, etc.)
Are you going to make it to E-town tomorrow?

Here's one thing I do know for sure... Xmax has more relevance to actual driver performance than 'underpowering' does... that gets my vote for the most over-used, over-emphasized term in all of car audio-dum.

For any single driver, output is limited by primarily two things:

1. Displacement (cone area and Xmax)

2. Efficiency

3. How much power the coil can handle

For high output, there is a trade-off here. In some cases, it may be preferable to go with a high efficiency, low displacement design because the coil could not physically handle the power necessary to make a high displacement design achieve the same output. However, at a certain point (huge output), displacement becomes the limiting factor. Exceeding Xmax is rarely a good thing, even in SPL competitions.
