Is there really that much difference in SQ between head units?

I settled on a clarion dxz775usb that has the features I wanted...NIB on ebay for 115 shipped. Considering the features, I think that was a steal. Im eagerly awaiting hooking it up to my ppi art a300 and rainbow slc components. Thanks for the interest.

I had paid little attention to this Clarion HU until your post, but have to agree with your comment about it being a steal at $115 for all the features!

time alignment is important why?

Absolutely. Simply put, it makes your sound system sound like a real stereo, rather than a 'car stereo'. The most common application is to delay the signal to the speaker that's on your side, so that the sound from left and right speakers arrives at the same time to your position, centering the stereo image in front of your. This works best when you run active, so you can control tweeter and woofer separately, but even with passive setups it worked great for me. I wouldn't listen to car audio without TA again. This feature does not have to be part of the head unit. It could be a feature of an external DSP.

In the price range you posted, you won't notice a difference. Find one you can navigate easiest and go with that.

This kid is looking at $100 radios and you are trying to get him to run active, teach about time alignment, etc. Walk before you run.
