Is there a rule about how far to have subs away from roof?

I am going to face subs up port back in the back of my explorer. Is there a general rule of thumb how far to have them away from the roof? (minimum or maximum)

i always thought rule of thumb was to take whatever the size of your sub is divide in half and that is how far but i could be wrong???

I haven't heard that but if in doubt I would go ahead and mount subs on the roof.

No rule, just build your box to the proper size and you will be OK.

Although, if the subs are only a few inches from the roof it will be smothered a little and the roof will rattle like crazy. And it will look dumb.

I personally wouldnt want them any closer than their diameter (10", 12", etc) to the roof. but there is no minimum/maximum as far as how close they can be to your head, i like mine about 1" away //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

They have weak roofs and won't really handle the pressure well. You'll lose those precious DBZ.

Try to stay as far away as you can.

In an explorer, dont build the box higher than the back seat, and make sure that the subs are in the front 1/2 of the box to prevent mass hatch rattle. I don't know what to say about your port back idea, cause mine's sub/port up, but I still get some rattle.

Sub up, ports back yields the highest SPL in explorers.
