Is there a proper way to use a bass knob?

That's actually the most useless type of bass knob. Bass boost is worthless. Remote gain actually makes sense since it lets you turn the subs down.

Am I supposed to bow in deference to to that name? Never heard of him. If that's what he told you about how to use a remote gain control, I'd ignore everything he tells you since he's either 100% wrong or you 100% misunderstood him.

he's president of Image dynamics and i think he knows how he designed his own amps i'm positive he knows alot more then you. and no i did not misunderstand him it was clearly what he said to do.

after doing some thinking i guess all amps are different and you should make sure what the remote knob does first. with my ID amps it does what the "remote" part states. if i leave my gain all the way up the remote knob does the same as if i had the gain in front of me. so again find out how exact the knob you have is before doing like i stated.

You can do whatever you like. Never seen an actual Image Dynamics amp, FWIW.

If you crank the gain on the amp and just use the remote, how do you know how far you can turn it up before the amp clips? Does it have a reliable clipping indicator on the remote? If you connect the remote gain, turn it to maximum and then correctly set the amp gain, the amp gain limits how high the gain will go. The remote allows you full control below that point. You now have a proper bass knob that you can fully use. Otherwise you're running the risk of turning it up higher than it can safely go and clipping the crap out of it.

do not use it. most amps i have had came with one and i never used it. if u set your amp right and u start to turn things up from this gain/bass knob u can start to have issues. u can allways get alittle more out put from your deck. check and see what u can do with your deck eq wise

same goes for the gain in the trunk how do you know if your clipping it if the amp doesn't have a clip indicator you have to play it by ear.
You can simply hook up an o-scope or use the standard DMM to a known good voltage. Unless you're riding around with the o-scope connected or the amp output voltage displayed on the dash, you have no clue where to stop. Depending on the input signal to the amp, leaving the main gain control at max may not allow you any control from the front and it still might clip depending on how the range of the remote is designed.

Those ID amps look nice but I seriously doubt that the president of the company had any hand in their design or that they're even manufactured by ID.

tell you what why don't you go over to the ID forum and ask him that?

that completely defeats the purpose. I want a way to quickly turn down bass.....

Im just going to crank the knob full tilt, THEN tune the amplifier to correct voltage.

And the plug on the amplifier is labeled "Bass EQ", not remote gain or bass boost hehe

I think it's just that Horsemanwill is a huge ID fan, and hates the fact that the company/owner is being bashed.

not that at all i'd back anyone up who's correct i've done it plenty of times here but the helotaxi stated i was wrong and that Eric was wrong but in fact we aren't and he is. It's different if we were but we are not. I've even went as far as to change it to check on the amp to make sure that if you do it the way i stated that it is how the amp operates.

I did earlier today what helotaxi said to do. I maxed out my remote and and then slowly raised the gain on my amp till till it got as loud as I felt safe.

The funny part is is that the gain ended up being exactly where I had it in the first place. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

So I guess I did it right the first time with my initial assumption. Atleast I now know I can max out the remote without fear of something going horribly wrong.
