is maple any good?

Maple is an excellent tone wood. It's a top choice for building string instruments, and speakers for a reason. Now any natural wood is going to change the sound of a speaker more than MDF will due to MDF being a consistent density, but for Subwoofers in a car you really won't notice anything but the good looks, and a much lighter wallet.
