Is a fused distro really necessary?

For example, running 1/0 to a distro then 4 gauge to an amp. I could just put a 150amp fuse at the battery and be done with it right? If it was a 300amp fuse, I could understand fusing at the distro for 4 gauge, but then again, what the hell is the poing of having a 300 instead of 150 at the battery when a 150 will protect both wires?
