Is Itunes the only Program I can use to upload music to an ipod? I want to add and remove music..Mostly from cd's..Anyone know of anything?

i'm pretty sure itunes is it. i feel like i heard of another program, but iirc you could only use it in conjunction with itunes, not stand alone

Back in the day when I had a 1st gen in early '02, I used a program called ephPod. Back then, ... they didn't want me; now I'm hot, and they're all on me. Naw, back then, the iPod was Mac-only, which wasn't technically correct. What made it "Mac-only" was that Macs had adopted Firewire instead of USB as its primary method of connecting peripherals, and Firewire was not at all common on PCs. The iPod only supported Firewire, and it was meant to connect to a Mac with iTunes installed on it. So me, with my PC & Windows 98 system grabbed a Firewire PCI expansion card and had to find something that would work since iTunes was the only program that did the iPod stuff (and I don't think there was a Windows-based iTunes at the time either). At that time, I found a (free) program called ephPod, which worked perfectly.

The iPod is really just mass storage device, but what makes it an "iPod" and not a hard drive is that the stuff on the hard drive is stored in a specific format. The directory structure was dictated by certain files. ephPod just knew how to read & parse those database files in order to transfer the right files.

Looks like ephPod is still active. http://www.ephpod.com/. I've long since departed with my iPod (worst DAP I've ever owned in my opinion, but it was the first, so it does get some points) so can't tell you whether or not it will work.

I just happen to reread your question so that I could conclude...but why don't you just rip the CD to MP3, and use iTunes to transfer files??? Functionally, iTunes gives you what you're looking for already (I don't know about the ripping part, but transferring MP3s not-downloaded by iTunes is possible).

I've long since departed with my iPod (worst DAP I've ever owned in my opinion, but it was the first, so it does get some points) so can't tell you whether or not it will work.

What DAPs have you owned and what do you think of them? My iPod is on its way out and i'm open to opinions for a replacement.

· 10GB 1st-gen iPod

· 20GB Rio Karma...3 of them

· 60GB Cowon iAudio X5

· iRiver PMP-something...barely used it

· 40GB iRiver H340 (currently)

· 20GB Rio Karma (currently)

The X5 & H340, I installed Rockbox on both, so software-wise they would be equal (though at the time, the X5 was a relatively new Rockbox port and still had lots of issues). Hardware/physical-interface-wise, I preferred the X5's setup. Also the X5's 60 gig hard drive is a direct drop-in for the H340 (turning it into an 'H360').

Overall, the Rio Karma was the best; I've owned three 'til Rio went out of business, then went the iRiver & Cowon way, but have since reverted to a Karma.

The thing I hate is that these devices try to do way too much and the next thing you know it's a discombobulated piece of equipment if audio is all you want. And they also are going towards looks. Lots of people would say an iPod visually looks more pleasing than other DAPs. I could care less...

Check out Mac World. It shows you how to load linux on your Ipod. It works the same, But is like a hard drive.

Just DL the OS and install it.

im usin musicmatch as much as i hate it but it works on my 5th gen 30gb ipod. but for some reason my laptop wont recognize my ipod through itunes weird eh. but ya musicmatch works.
