im looking to get a new phone (i have sprint now) and i cant decide if i should go with the iphone 3gs (dont like iphone 4) or with the evo 4g.

what are some advantages and disadvantages to each phone? my contracts up so i would be getting a new one anyway.

thanks

If you don't like a 4G iPhone, then why in gods name would you want the 3G'S? lol!

EVO all the way and this coming from a Blackberry fan....messed around a lot with both iPhone and Andriods though.

EVO is faster, actually can use 4g as iPhone 4g is 4th generation.....is on IMO a better network as iPhones bog the system down and has an awesome web experience, granted so does the iPhone...

I like the bigger size actually. My new phone will be the EVO...maybe, some sick stuff coming up for BB....

I think you can trust my opinion on this one. I work for AT&T, and I have had a Sprint account for quite some time (and still do). My current phone is the Palm Pre for Sprint, and the Blackberry Bold 9700 for my AT&T work phone.

I used to be an iGuy. The iPhone 4 turned out to be a severe disappointment, though. It's great as an iPod Touch, and HORRIBLE as a phone. I have people come in every single day complaining about dropped calls. For $100 more than the 3GS, it's not worth it.

I also used to be an Android hater. That was until I played around with the Samsung Captivate, which is AT&T's Galaxy S phone. It is currently my favorite phone on the market. My upfront suggestion would be to go for this phone instead of the others. The reason being is the lack of complaints we get about them. I have only had one or two people complain about them, and that is only because of software glitches like the GPS locator and power on/off issue. These are issues that can be fixed with a little tweaking, and will likely be fixed in later software updates in the future. Of those people who voiced those complaints, they still all say they love the phone. It's the standout of our lineup of phone imho.

But on to the 3GS/Evo comparison...

Evo 4G: There are 3 main issues with this phone.

1. The battery life is HORRIBLE. The 3GS is the contrary. The iPhone 4 has the longest battery life of any phone currently on the market.

2. Sprint charges $10 for the 4G service regardless of whether you can take advantage of it or not. For your two years of owning the phone, that's $240 down the drain if you don't live around a WiMax hotspot.

3. Sprint's 4G service is a fluke. In being the first 4G network, they lack coverage. I live near Portland, so it wouldn't be an issue for me. But don't expect yourself to be as lucky. Even worse, the performance is nowhere near as good as it's hyped up to be. I believe it was Cnet, although it may have been another site, but they pitted the 4G up against the iPhone 4, and the iPhone was as fast or faster overall using AT&T's 3G network. This is because WiMax has large spikes of speed, and large drops of speed, while the 3G network is much more consistent overall. Don't quote me on that, as I read that a while ago. Feel free to do your own research.

Things to like:

1. The screen...vibrant, responsive, large. Sort of like my e-Peen.

2. Android...if you like Android, then...yeah.

3. Camera

4. Speed in general

iPhone 3GS: Things not to like...

1. It's not the best phone. Better than the 4, but still not good. The network is definitely clogged up with iPhone users, so you may still experience dropped calls.

2. AppStore...obviously a love/hate relationship. Largest appstore, but not as many free apps as one would like. This is because you have to invest a lot to become a developer, unlike the Android market.

3. Screen...it's good, but nowhere near as vibrant as the Evo's. It's more fluid though. Nobody has yet to best the touch screen experience of the iPhones imo.

It has a long of things going for it though...

1. Price...only $99 for the 8GB! It's the best $99 phone we carry. The Captivate is $199, and I believe the Evo is the same

2. Physical market...there's more accessories out there than you can shake your e-Peen at.

3. There's an app for that...

4. Besides the phone and camera, it excels at pretty much everything. The camera is good, just not as good as the Evo's.

5. Jailbreaking...Pretty much rapes your phone, in a good way. You can get nearly every appstore app for free, and customize it as if it were an Android. You have not experienced an iProduct's potential if you haven't jailbroken one before.

The list goes on...

I would take the Captivate over both as I mentioned before, and the 3GS over the Evo. People seem to think of the 3GS as archaic, but really it's nearly just as good a phone as 95% of the phones on the current market, if not better. The Evo probably is more hyped up than the iPhone, and didn't fully live up to its hype. It is still a killer phone though, but not worth the $100 premium over the 3GS. Were they the same price...Evo for sure.

I should also mention that AT&T, at least in my area, has 20x the coverage that Sprint does. I have never once not had service with AT&T, even in parking garages! I have not played around with their 3G service though, as the Bold's web browser makes me want to have an anal evacuation. Sprint's 3G network is pretty well covered, but their phone service isn't. It's worth the premium to go AT&T if you have the money.

Hope this helps! I put a lot of time into this, so it better!

Samsung Epic. Its the top phone on the market right now. Second choice would be the Evo. I wouldnt consider an iPhone at all.
I disagree completely. I would rather rip all the hairs out of my scrotum than type on that keyboard again. Not to mention that it is on Sprint's network, which I discussed in my previous post...

/thread
My best friend's dad has had both. He has a connection with Verizon and gets to test out any phone he wants. From what I remember, he said he didn't like the size of the X (that's the one with the bigger screen, right?), and the Incredible was incredibly unreliable. Otherwise, they are pretty standout phones.

Every phone on the market has its fair share of ups and downs. I think the Captivate is the best phone on the market because it is a good all around phone, and it is reliable. Both things are equally important I think. I should mention though that it doesn't have a flash for the camera. That is a big issue to a lot of people.

I will write up a pro/con list of the Captivate if you guys request. I just figured I should stick on topic, so I only did so for the 3GS/Evo

lol my dad works for verizon, and ive had both as well. and you know kids, were always on our phones and use them, and are probably harder on them then most if not all adults. i love my incredible that i have now. what you say about it not being reliable is a half truth. there seems to be a larger number of apps that will make it crash. but if you pay attention to what app you added when the issue started and remove it they are extremely reliable.

on the other hand, i loved every performance aspect of my X, but i only had it for a month or so. because the 700+ selling price on ebay was too tempting and it was too big for my hands, but it never once reset it self, and i never had an issue with it. oh and the camera and video camcorder on that is the S3X!

Nice to know things turned out well for you //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

My other best friend's brother had the X I believe. He got rid of it because it was super unreliable as well, and he also said that he knew people as well with the same issues.

This is just third-party experience for me, though. I have never played around with those phones. But going from a phone like the Captivate with no large complaints to hearing a lot of complaints about the X and Incredible, I have my reasons for liking the Captivate.

On a totally off-topic note...

Everyone who enters our store seems to be insistent on fucking up the iPhone names as much as humanly possible. I mean, it's not like it's that hard to remember a goddamn number! People can remember the name of the Droid Incredible, but they can't seem to figure out what the iPhone 4/3GS is called. I have heard...

4G

The 4 (they just romp in saying "do you have the 4????!?11)

i4

SG3

and the worst was some beaner who asked if we carried the iGS3...I was like...the fuck are you talking about mang? You tired or something?

I couldn't help but laugh at him //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

lmao, yea you see some real characters come into phone stores

Such as this one bulimic lady...

She spent over 6 hours in the store, just for stupid service questions. My poor coworker spent his whole shift helping her out, didn't sell a single thing that day!

She literally went into the settings of her iPhone, clicked on about, and started asking what every single piece of info on that screen meant. Then she went back, into other menus and did the same. She went to where the keyboard settings are, and under "keyboard", she asked, "why does it say 1?" Stupid ish like that.
