Interesting stories from where you least expect them...

So I was hanging out tonight with some friends, and we were approached by a homeless guy. I was prepared for a few things:

1) He was gonna pull out a knife and try to mug us

2) He's crazy and or drunk

3) He wanted money

But none of those happened. I actually ended up spending an hour and a half talking to this guy. He was a very interesting character. He was a math genius. He did math in his head like I've never seen anyone else to do. He apparently wasn't the best at grammar, though. He failed the first grade three times because he was born in Quebec, and moved to the US as he was entering 1st grade. So, since he didn't speak English, only French, everything the teacher said went over his head.

The guy was very, very sharp and witty. He was telling us about how he drove a psychologist crazy to the point where she had to see a psychologist. He was always a smartass to her. Like one time she talked at him for 30 minutes or so. In the meantime, he sort of spaced out and let everything go in one ear and out the other. When she had finished her rant, she asked "Do you have anything to ask me?", to which he replied "What color panties are you wearing?" She got all pissed and told him to GTFO. Then she took a break for a month, saw a psychologist herself and then came back. She was much nicer, then.

The sad part of the story is that he's an escapee from a hospice. He's got leukemia and congestive heart failure. He was tired of the hospice and didn't want to spend his last days in a place where he was told what to do and when to do it until he dies. He talked about how he's got 6 months, max, according to the doctors. He told us that he's been blessed, though, and that he's been waiting for a miracle or something. As he was talking to us, it started to come to him that God was blessing him through people like myself and my friends. So many people had given him things- food, money, clothes... and he didn't even have to ask. I gave him a shirt of mine, a warm hat, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and 10 bucks.

I hope to see him again.

Sounds like a neat guy. Not sure why he had to "escape" from a hospice though. They aren't like mental hospitals. You can leave whenever you want.

yeah he was all like "It's not like theres a court order for me to be in there! That's why I left!"

I have always believed the homeless guy on the corner has a much more interesting life story to tell than the average joe who scrapes by and holds a 9-5 job. But their situation is of such a disadvantage, their stories are lost. It's really quite sad

It'd be fun to write a book about them. Just interview them and get their stories on tape and write them down.
