So I've been best friends with my buddy Steven since we were in Kindergarten. He failed first grade, and was held back a year. So, today, I attended his graduation. It was all going fine and dandy until the valedictorian came to the podium to speak.
As you all know, the usual valedictorian speech is something along the lines of "It was fun. Follow your dreams, and you can achieve whatever you want to..." yada yada yada, blah blah blah. This girl wasn't about to give a cliche motivational speech... she gave a straight up sermon. She went off on a 20-minute tangent preaching the Gospel. I'm a Christian, and I'm glad to see her sharing her faith and stuff, but seriously... save it for church. I would've been perfectly fine with her mentioning Jesus. In fact, the first time she did, people stood up and cheered. Maybe going off on a tangent for a minute or two would've been understandable... but this girl preached a sermon. She barely had anything worthy of being called a graduation speech.
The students tried to pull a "Wrap it up" by applauding... and not one, not two, but all three times the girl kept going, despite the collective moans of the audience and graduates. The worst part is... her 'lesson' didn't evem make sense. It's like she got up there and rambled, and made some random analogy to a parachute. I saw where she was going with it, but she never tied it up. To make matters worse, she went to a place I like to call 'Minority High', because whites are very outnumbered by Bosnians (there's a big Bosnian population here in Jax), Indians, Arabs and blacks. Most of the blacks and whites cheered for her... for the first 5 minutes. Everyone else stared at her in disdain.
All in all, I think the probably turned more people off of Christianity than she would've if she had just mentioned Jesus a couple times.
Thoughts?
