Insurance or No?

My buddy has two 12'' type R's and he wants $150 for them. I think its a good deal what do u think? But i can also get them brand new for probably $100 a piece and have like a 1 year warrenty on them. No that one year warranty doesnt mean much to me if i can get the same two subs (they've been used for probably about 1 month or so) for $150 (Im going to try to talk him down //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif ) My question is how is a sub blown. Is it somthing easy to do or is it jus for them people trying to turn them as loud as possible? Thanks

I have got no idea. Check ebay and see what their "used" going rate is. Personally, I'd cough up the extra $50 and have a 1yr warranty on them.

Very open ended question. But, there are basically 3 ways to blow a sub;

1) Mechanical failure

2) Electrical failure

3) Manufacturer defect

Mechanical failure would be when something is damaged by the movement of the sub; usually caused by overexcurtion of the woofer or not being careful while handling the woofer. This includes things such as bottoming out the woofer (and damaging the VC former, among other parts), tearing a spider, tearing a surround, snapping a tinsel lead, etc etc.

Electrical failure is damaging the woofer electrically. This would be by exceeding the voice coils thermal power handling limit and subsequently frying the voice coil.

Manufactuer defect is exactly that; an error in manufacturing that causes the speaker to not function properly.

As long as you understand how the properly use your sub, # 1 & 2 are easily avoided. Don't clip your amp, realize that mechanical power handling is box dependent, don't heavily overpower the sub, use the right sized box, etc etc. Manufacturer defects can't exactly be avoided //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
