i want to install a alpine deck into my 98 honda civic with stock radio. I bought the wire kit from crutchfeild and the installation kit( which is only a small plastic peice). Anyone ever put a HU into a civic? Do i have to spice wires and use those plastic things to hold them in place. Any help would be cool thanks

also...will a simple utility knife with the flat head and phillips screw driver heads on the end that fold out work for the installation or will i need more tools.

it depends, my car i need to use a socket cuz the philip screw was too tight and i need an ext to get to it

you should plug in the wiring harness to the factory harness and then you then to strip the wiring harness and cd player harness wires and twist the wires together and i usually use use elec tape over then. or you can crimp closed end connectors on them or butt connectors

getting the factory head unit out is the hardest part. You need to take off the lower dash, and reach up in because the factory Honda radio (which is a Pioneer - made in mexico, by the way) there is a screw that is holding it in back

After that its cake... just wiring harness and plastic trim kit

Thats if you're in a rush, or if it's not your car

the best way is solder.

Very easy once you take the bolts out that hold the stock unit down in the back of it. You need to take the lower dash apart though, but that's just some screws and it comes off.

I wired mine directly, no harness. Didn't need factory speaker wire, just power, ground and ignition.

Oh, and for the 96-00 Civic's, you don't need a dash kit really. The mounting sleeve for the radio will fit really snug into the dash. Only thing I used is the trim ring that came with the radio.

And the best way (IMO) is to solder and shrink wrap the connections, which is what I did.

Edit: I can't spell tonight.

If i bought the wire harness kit then i don't need to splice or krimp wires right? otherwise whats the point of buying the wire kit
hahah

because without the wiring kit, you would have to cut off the factory connector, making reinstallation of the stock headunit nearly impossible and make future deck replacements just as hard.

Its the same amount of splicing whether you get the harness or not. But the harness will save you a LOT of headache in the future.

OK, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.....do you have factory keyless entry? (Remote to lock and unlock your doors) I know it doesn't sound relevant but if you do then I would not do this install yourself and let a professional do it to save you the headache.

The factory keyless entry system is built into the factory deck and you actually have to keep it plugged in and have to hide it behind the dash for your keyless entry to still work. AGAIN: you will have to hide your factory radio behind the dash! I hate doing these cars for that reason and I highly recommend having someone else doing it to save you time and a headache.

If you do not have factory keyless then to keep your domelight working after adding an aftermarket deck you need to connect the light green/black wire to the light green/red wire. I believe they are in a green plug.

this is true. Totally forgot. I had to ditch the factory keyless entry in my 2000 Honda Civic Si because i installed a deck. But i got the keyless entry back with an aftermarket alarm system. Still got the factory remote hanging in my room, hasnt been used since 2001

So if u lose the keyless entry for an aftermarket deck (its worth it) just do an alarm to retain keyless entry. You'll probably need it anyways as Civics are extremely sought after by thieves, and extremely easy to break into, and a deck in a 96-00 civic just screams "take me". I used to be a car thief in my drug days. I know everything there is about breaking into and stealing Hondas. Don't worry i've been clean for a long time now. Let me know if you have any questions regarding securing your honda.
