ok so the wire is too thick to fit into the slots underneath the screws on my amp.. the power, ground, etc etc.. do i have to find ring terminals that fit or what? can i cut some off the copper off so it fits?

not really sure

thanks for your help.. for anyone who knows ive been doing my first installation today after 3 weeks of being into car audio.. headunit took me a total of 8 hrs lol but i turned it on and it worked beautifully //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Better to find a ring lug, trimming off wire reduces the effective size. Basically the same as reducing the size/rating of the wire. If you are already oversize it shouldnt hurt, if not get a lug.

what size wire you using?

get a spade terminal or ring terminal if you have to.

what amp and what subs.

how much power?

u might be okay clippin some wireoff it.

ur talking about less than 1/2 inch of wire smaller size, i dont think you will lose much power over that length!

If the connection is reduced, the current transfer ability is reduced. Period. Weakiest link in the chain theory. Not saying it wont work, specially if hes already oversize. Just explaining the facts to him.

If you do a power over wire calculator. You quickly learn that in 95% of peoples wire, they don't take into account the distance being ran. You can get away with A LOT over short distances.

Plus I said, he maybe will be okay. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

thats why i asked what sub amp he is using and wire size.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

I agree, but he is new to this and was trying to give him a general understanding of what happens when you reduce the wire/connection. And yes, in this situation the amp(current draw) is definitely the determining factor of whether or not it is acceptable.

do you use a fuse in your wire?

if yea, why would you go with 1/0 wire if you put a fuse in with such a tiny piece of copper or w/e, is the current transfer ability reduced? if yea, why not go with just 14gauge wire, a fuse isn't bigger anyways.

how should a beginner learn something about audio, if someone explains facts like that... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Maybe you should learn a little more about current flow and thermal resistance before you talk.

You're an idiot!

Just trim off a few strands. You won't hurt anything.

Theoretically you're reducing current capacity of the wire and increasing voltage drop, but in practice it will be negligible, almost immeasurable.

That inch of wire which has been stripped even down to half of its normal thickness still has more current carrying capacity than the rest of a 15 foot piece of the full size...

wow. it's been gone over 189472654860937753 times.

if you need a spade, use a spade. don't just shove the wire under there. and if it's a set-screw deal, just trim the wire a little. i will guarantee you will not loose any power. shaving back 1/2 inch will not decrease anything. it doesn't turn 15+ ft of 1/0 into 4ga.

hes got it!! just get a spade, they are like $.89 for one of them, not to mention how much cleaner the install will look, rather than a huge wire shoved under a screw... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
