No,you want a MONO amp a.k.a. Class D amp.
Mono means one as in one terminal which has a + speaker input terminal and a - speaker input terminal.
Mono/Class D amps are much more efficient then Class A/B or 2 channel amplifiers.
Figure about 50% to 60% efficiency from a Class A/B and 75% to 95% efficiency from a good Class D amplifier.
Mono comes in handy especially when the amp is stable down to 1 ohm.
You have SVC (Single Voice Coil) and DVC (Dual Voice Coil) subwoofers and in some cases the rare QVC (Quad Voice Coil) subwoofer.
Almost all SVC car audio subwoofers are 4 ohms but there are some that are 8 ohms and I beleive there are some 2 ohm SVC subs too.
DVC subwoofers 99% of the time will be either 4 ohm DVC (Two 4 ohm voice coils per sub) or 2 ohm DVC.
Having DVC subs allows you more wiring options from wiring multiple subs to eaxtracting the most power you can from your mono/Class D amplifier. But you must be carefull,if your sub will present an ohm load lowr then the amp can handle or is stable at then you run risk of damage to the amp and the sub(s).
As far as those subs go...LMFAO....No way man those **** hairy ape balls never even heard of them and they are rated 8 ohms and 325w RMS and probably would blow if given a real 325w RMS each.
What are your goals for your application...to be loud and beat the street or to sound good or a mixture of both.
Are you an SPL person or a SQ/SQL person? *EDIT* *I SEE YOU SAID YOU WANT DECENT SQ*
How much are you wanting to spend total on your cars stereo?Working with the Factory HU or an Aftermarket HU?
Seeing as you sound Like a complete car audio newbie (which you have actually stated) I'll be a big help and help to get you started of in the right direction....I've only been into and understood the basics of car audio now for about a year or two.
When I first started out 2.5 Years ago with two Visoik 10"s in a Dual 10" Bandpass box and a Profile CA600M Mono/Class D amp and some crappy HU I did'nt know shit....really I didn't.
I read up on
crutchfield how to set the gains but didn't pay much attention to it and set by ear and ended up using bass boost up and gain up and HU volume clipping maxed out and bass control on HU all the way up treble all the way up fader more toward the rear stage then the front stage.........you can guess what happened next.
Then I decided ok lets get two 10" Sonly Xplod's and put them in the bandpass box on the Profile CA600M and a new HU,a Sony CDX-M630.
Bass centered, treble up a bit, fader centered, balance centered, subwoofer volume/level up all the way volue up as far as it could go untill it sounded like absolute ***......again you can guess what happened....
Then I decided to look around on the web and came across this forum and many others like it,some a good place to learn other a crying shame.
I asked questions and more questions and got answers from those that are actually saying someting and didn't listen to those who blow hot air out their mouths.
I then came across this place
http://www.bcae1.com and well that covers more car audio basics then you'd like to probably learn about but that place is packed chaulk full of infomation.
Check it out, read some of the basics and learn and gain knowledge....
Good Luck on your trip through the car audio world.
