Info on the CDA-9887

I was going to get the Alpine 9886 but for 100 bucks more I've been looking into the 9887. It says the crossover is adjustable from 20-200 Hz for high/low pass. How close can you select each point? 50,55,60, etc? Also is the crossover in the head unit better than a built in crossover on an amp? (Zapco Reference with 12db slope) I read about people using this h/u for an active setup, I know thats for high/low pass but not for tweeter crossover as they need crossed around 4K?

It can be used actively... Low/Band(mid)/High passes are all available when set to 3 way mode. I don't know the octave increments, but down low, I think it goes 50/63/80/100/125/160, etc. Been awhile since i have checked mine. Also as far as I know the slope is either 0, 6, 12, 18, or 24dB/octave. It is definitely worth the extra $100.

I dont know what the exact freqs are but yes you can run active with the tweeters around 4k. I use the old 9835 and it has a lot of freqs to choose from for the tweeters. 2k, 2.5k, 3k, on so on. There should be someone on here that can check theres on 3-way set up to give you the exact numbers. Yes you can adjust the crossover points and the slope. Here is a link to the manual, doesnt give you all the freqs for the crossover but does show how it works.

Is it worth getting the 9887 over the 9886 if i'm not going to run my fronts active?

Also with the time correction would it still work if the tweeters and mids are on the same amp? And would it make it sound worse for the passenger?

Nismo, I think it's worth the extra $100 if you value a SQ HU with 24-bit Burr Brown D/A converter. Also, if you are planning on using the Imprint system, then the CDA-9887 is the only HU available from Alpine that is capable of this. If you're looking for slightly used, I got mine with an iPod cable for $340 shipped which is $65+ below MSRP.

9886 can use imprint as well. Just the new imprint is not out yet.

As far as I know, the 9886 is pretty much useless unless you have the Imprint. The 9886 unit alone cannot adjust the EQ or the crossovers, it requires Imprint. The 9887 on the other hand can use the features by it self, the Imprint is used for Auto TA and EQ.

It has simple bass and treble controls. It also has 24bit dacs so its worth it for those things if you are a more simple user who still wants great sound.

Good call. I should have worded my statement, that it's worthless for an active setup by it self, it will require the Imprint to access those features.
