Infinite Baffle Avalanche

Sparks mean its working!
Hey guys.

This summer I'll be getting a new car. One of the options I'm looking at is a Chevy Avalanche because it looks nice and fulfills my needs of carrying a few extra people and having some space to throw my crap. However, the cabin is a bit cramped for a stereo. I've seen a couple people remove the midgate and build enclosures in the bed (sealing the front baffle to the cabin obviously) and got to thinking that this might be the perfect opportunity to put together a true infinite baffle install. Obviously, I would have to get a water-tight tonneau cover, but I'd like to see what all is involved in doing an install in an Avalanche with the tailgate removed. Anyone who has done this kind of install or know where I can see some, PLEASE post in here (more pics, the better). Also, anyone with infinite baffle experience or any ideas is welcome.

OK, /novel

Thanks for the help.

Aaron

I just put an IB install in my car and, with the subs I have, it sounds great (though I don't have much to compare it to). One thing you'll want to make sure you cover is if the subs you want will do well in an IB enviroment, not all subs are designed for that.

If you are hesitant about an IB install, why not stick a regular ported or vented box in the midgate? Your box will be in your box (sub box in your truck box), waterproffed still and sealed off, with the front of the subs pounding into the cabin. Not entirely sure if that's feasible, but I don't see why not.

Basically, your IB plan, but witha box around it, ya? All in all, I think it'l ldepend on what subs you're looking to install though.

Well if your sealing the bed from water It may defeat the whole IB idea. Although the bed wont be sealed it will still act as a enclosure.
It will function the same. Yes, it will act as an enclosure, but will be such a big enclosure that it will function like an infinite baffle. Hell, people ( like a couple who've posted in here) do IB setups in sedans. As long as the volume behind the woofer is 10x the VAS value of the woofer in question, you're golden. With the Avalanche, you're looking at an easy 30-40 cubes.

Yeah, I know that not every woofer is suited for this. I'll be doing a lot of research before I actually buy woofers. I know James is using the IDMax. Looking at maybe one or two of the new Mags if those are suitable for IB. Any other suggestions are encouraged.

I'm not hesitant at all about doing this, I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered. Nothing I hate more than getting ino a project and having to delay it because I don't know or have what I need to complete it. I'm REALLY excited about building a TRUE IB install

IB done in a car is basically a large sealed box. Some do go as far as to vent their trunks to the outside. But with an enclosure large enough, a sub will play as if it were IB'd.

Bottom line, this will be closer to a true IB than most installs. And when I want to show off, all I have to do is lower the tailgate. If I want, I migh put a vent in, but I don't think it'll be necessary.

Have a TC9 hybrid, so that might work. Basically the same thing. I'm really excited to see what the new mag does.
I don't think the new mag will be suitable for IB judging by Nicks goals for it. I would go with the IDmax, Mach 5 IXL, Find a pair of ascendant Avalanches. IMO those would make great IB woofers.

To clarify, IB is when Qtc = Qts and Fc = Fs. However, I would say the point of diminishing returns is typically ~3-4x Vas.

Are you wanting to see installs, or looking for ideas on a good subwoofer candidate?

I'm mainly looking to see installs where people have removed the midgate so I can see what kind of tonneau they used, what they had to do to seal everything up, etc. But any suggestions on woofers are welcome. Do any of you guys think that the Aura MR would make a good IB woofer? I've heard they're SQ monsters, but don't know much about them.
