DISCLAIMER: This post has the potential to become a bit heated. We're mostly all adults here, so lets keep the conversation factual and civil. If you are somehow offended by this post or cant handle the subject matter like an adult, please refrain from posting in this thread and keep your opinions to yourself. No sense in getting a perfectly good, factual, and informational thread shut down because of someone's emotions. So on to the post...
Human behavior and the decisions we make have always interested me. I work at the Department of Health, so I often run across interesting tidbits of info. I also went through *** ed in school and learned about all the risks involved with having ***. Now I've never been a promiscuous type of guy, but I know plenty of people who are. The guys at my night job are always saying, "man if I was young and single I'd be out there getting it all the time" as the reminisce about their old flings, and I can only help but think that there are a lot more things to be worried about in this day and age than twenty or thirty years ago.
Tonight one of the guys who is always talking about that type of stuff was saying how he'd be out there getting all he could if he were me, and I told him that it's all fine and good, but there are a lot of risks these days, and as our conversation continued it got me remembering facts I've heard here and there. I live in Davidson county, right on the line, about fifty feet away from Robertson county. Robertson county has the highest rate of AIDS in Tennessee. Thats a scary statistic if you're sleeping around. Another statistic I remember is that one in five people have herpes, or maybe it was any STD, not exactly sure on that one as it was a *** ed statistic. Regardless, those aren't odds I'd be willing to risk just to get some booty.
So anyway, I know we are a relatively young age group around here. I was curious how many of you know people with an STD of some sort. I'm not trying to get personal with anyone, and I'm not asking who you're sleeping around with, but I just wonder if the statistics are anywhere near true. I also cant help but wonder what type of situation the world will be in if I ever have kids and have to have this talk with them when they get to the right age. The first time I ever remember hearing about an STD was when Magic Johnson announced to the world that he had AIDS. You can read numbers all day and never have anything sink in, but when you actually hear it from someone you know or are familiar with, it's a different story. We live in a world that promotes and condones promiscuity and it's really got me wondering where we stand as a society. So type out a response if you like, but lets keep it mature here. I just like to do background studies on these types of things from time to time so lets keep anything personal out of this and stick to the facts. I'll be the first to go...
I personally know someone who has had an STD that you can get rid of, gonorrhea (sp?). This guy got around, a lot, so he was basically asking for it, but he got lucky. It was something he could treat and move on. I also know someone else, a very nice person, that was unfortunate enough to make one bad decision, and now she's stuck with herpes for the rest of her life. So thats two people that I know who have had or have an STD (and I think that it's almost not fair because of the type of people they are and the severity of what they ended up with). Anyway, just trying to figure out where we stand as a society and if the statistics we hear from time to time are really valid or not.
