OK, maybe not quick, but something happened to me Friday that really changed my outlook on SPL, money, and people's feelings.
In the past few years, I have worked with seemingly every name from Alpine to Zapco, Audiobahn to US Amps, and so on. At CC, I work pretty much with Kenwood, MTX, and Alpine. Pretty much mid-line, run of the mill stuff.
I pulled the card for the next install. It was a 86 Escort getting 2 Profile Baja 10's and a Baja 200 watt amp. This is the stuff we sell to people that don't want to spend alot. I say the list and was like "****..I hate this stuff."
I go outside and do the checklist on the car. It was a faded purple, torn seats, cracked dash and cracked windsheild. Someone had tried to hookup a Pyramid Eq/booster in the dash to the factory radio and they cyt huge holes in the doors for 6 X 9's...which we're not really in there.
I pulled the car in Bay 1 (right nest to the entrance door where customers watch EVERY move you make...installers hate this bay). I noticed the owner of this car was right next to me. He must have been about 18 and had his little brother with him. They we're SOOOO excited to be finally getting a stereo installed.
I decided to strike up a conversation with the kids. Anyone who knows me will tell you this is rare. He was telling me how him and his dad tried to hook everything up and how they share the car. He works at a local Taco Bell at night, while his dad works at some chicken plant during the day. Obviously hardworking folks. He was telling me how they just could'nt figure out how to make everything work and burned up the radio.
At this point I was really beginning to feel bad. This kid had saved up alot of money to get this stuff and whenever I see "Baja" come through the install doors, I cringe. I really do. Well, they wandered off and I proceeded to do the work.
As I was finishing up, the younger brother asked who's red S10 was sitting outside. For the first time in my life, I said "I don't know...I think it's some customers". The older brother said how he wished he could have something like that, but, he's got to get a better job and his folks would kill him if he spent all that on a stereo.
Talk about feeling low....
I got done with their car and finished tuning it up. I tried my ****edest to make it sound as good as possible. I REALLY tried. I also fixed the door speakers, and got the rear outputs working again (wires were touching).
I backed the car out and gave him the keys. They both ran over to hear it and sat there for about 20 minutes just loving they're new sounds. Just seeing how happy they we're really put a spin on my outlook.
You know, like I said, I've been doing this for a long time. I've worked for alot of hateful, disrespectful, non appreciative people. Alot of people take this stuff for granted. Do you REALLY realize what you have in your car? Do you realize how many kids don't even have cars?
All my whining and compaling trying to just get 1 more dB...while some kid is happy with a low 130, makes me wonder sometimes.
The escort kid came up to me and tried to give me a tip. I told him "no". He already gave me enough.
So, next time your at a stoplight, with your mid 150 dB's, and some kid pulls up next to you with a pair of 10's, let him enjoy himself, it's all he's got. He's happy, why would you want to take that away from him?
