imma noob... advise on tweeters?

i look at the type r's and it says the db sensitivity is at 87 db..

Alpine SPR-17S - 6.75" Component Speakers | Pacific Stereo

so id need a tweeter that has a low db sensitivity? and also run at or less that 50w.. would 90 db be close enough? because those horn tweeters and such are all up by 90db sensativity and up. thats what I've seen. and i don't mind the tweeter being a little louder than it was. but if the tweeter is using less power than it normally would, does that mean i could somehow make the mid louder? or is it already at the peak power it can handle?

Right. You match that to one of these 1 INCH HORNS from Parts Express ship same day and come with 45 day money back guarantee. Free Shipping Available. Order free 10,000 product catalog.

People who do these HLCDs often use the large horns and mount them under the dash. Have you considered how you would mount these?

As for the sensitivity matching issue, ideally you would want an active crossover for this. It would be more difficult if you stick with the Alpine crossover because putting the horn in the circuit could actually modify the sound coming out of the woofer depending on how the crossover is made. It would also need what's called an L-pad which is a passive component meant to lower the volume without modifying the impedance.

Like I said before, integrating HLCDs is a lot more complex.

You are correct. I guess I lost track of the topic somewhere along the way, I would not recommend running a hlcd in a passive comp setup (unless designed for them). To make them truly shine, they really need their own channels of amplification, xover network, and EQ'ing.

Good catch, thanks.

fml lol... so what should / can i use with the current crossover and mid drivers that i have? i want loud, but sound quality is also important to me. i don't want to be cutting up my car. so I'm thinking maybe going with a pod... haven't been able to find very many tho. i might cut out a hole for them on the panel running along the side of my windshield.

FYI, that's your "A Pillar." A lot of people do put tweeters there. I personally prefer to put them on the inside of where the side mirrors are e.g. what this guy did http://www.caraudio.com/forums/enclosure-design-construction-help/178885-focus-tweeter-pods-worklog-pics-2.html -- but it is common and fine to do it in the A-pillar. I think it might actually be more common to do it in the A pillar.

Is there a part number on your tweeter that you can give us?

Edit to add: In general, for a decently priced tweeter for the car, this is what I recommend: http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/hard-dome-tweeter/seas-prestige-27tafnc/g-h1397-1-aluminum-dome-tweeter/ - it should integrate reasonably well with your Alpine crossover, but it's still a crossover designed for the tweeter that it came with, so it might not integrate perfectly. If it has a tweeter level adjustment then that will definitely be helpful. Note: If you do order this, know that it is NOT for a pair. You'd have to order two of them.

so if i get a different cross over with a tweeter. will my mid be easier to adjust to it? or is it just how the whole system is set up?

and still nobody has answered my q on the 0 db -3 db -6db and so on setting on my crossovers question.

Well, no, most people build up something out of fiberglass. Or sometimes you can buy something. Sometimes people do cut a hole in a door panel or something to mount a tweeter. It's all up to you. It's better to angle the tweeters a bit so that they are around the side mirror or even A pillar areas and facing approximately the area in between the two front seats. (The EXACT ideal aim varies a bit depending on the tweeter you use and the car you have... but what I just said should generally work pretty well... if you're willing to put that kind of work into it.)

If you want to cut a hole near the tops of your door panels (or some other panel that has room for it and which will have reasonable aim) and just flush mount a tweeter... hey, it still beats most stock tweeter mounting locations. A pillars and side mirror inside trim probably won't have enough room to mount a tweeter without building them up somehow, be it fiberglass or something else.
