I was going to make a long argument explaining my re-conversion to atheism (I assure you that I never really believed there was a god, only that it was potentially plausible, or alternatively that I would never be able to prove that there is or isn't one). The simple answer is that god is easily disproved with the application of logic and mostly disproved with the application of science; the gaps in knowledge only prove that we humans are fallible (far from a perfect creation, as is often argued) and does not prove that there is a god.
At this point, I can see no logical reason that supports god (and even less that support organized religion) and thus cannot support the belief in either of those two. By its own definition, religion encourages a level of conflict and irrationality that has empirically proven how dangerous it is.
The most bizarre thing is that people do not realize that one leap of faith is no more worthy than any other leap of faith. People widely denounce the Greek Gods as false idolatry. There is no reason why this is any more false than any current form of religion, except that belief in the Greek Gods was stamped out by slaughter and oppression committed by Christians against those who believed it. What is "right" in religion is often determined by popularity, which is gained by force....now what person in their right mind would condone or believe in such atrocities?
Epicureanism has influenced me in ways I could never imagine. It is not that I was unaware of Epicurus (or unaware of the detriments of religion in general), but that I believed there was value in organized religion for some. As time has passed, I have seen how religion detracts and patches over the real issues in life. The desire to falsify everything, to hide the realities of life, has really made this world a worse place and brings nothing but frustration for me.
If God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able to
Then He is not omnipotent.
If He is able, but not willing
Then He is malevolent.
If He is both able and willing
Then whence cometh evil?
If He is neither able nor willing
Then why call Him God?
edit: This is not to say that I intend to convert others to Atheism or tell them what to think (ala Fundamentalist Christian...I don't wish to be a mirror image as some Atheists have become)....just that I personally believe there is legitimate harm in the belief of god and/or religion.
