is it legal to drive with one eye blind?
I would assume so as I have held a valid DL since the day of my 15th Bday and I lost the vision in my right eye at age 7. Moreso I currently have a Louisiana Class D license (chauffeur's license) which allows me to legally operate taxicabs, limos, school buses, and any other vehicle or vehicle/trailor combo under 40' total length and under 26,001 pounds GVRW.
However - I have the most incredibly ignorant restrictions on my DL as a result...
One of them, Louisiana driver's license restriction #3: "Eyes cannot be improved." Well, DUH!! When my eye got hurt the lens was shattered into a bazillion pieces, the cornea was severely scratched, and the retina was detached from the optic nerve with severe scarring. That simply ain't getting fixed.
The other restriction placed on my license, Louisiana driver's license restriction #4: "Left outside rearview mirror." Meaning if I am caught driving a vehicle that the mirror on the driver's door is either missing or damaged beyond usefulness I can be given a citation for it. Show me a US street-legal vehicle built in the last 5 decades that doesn't have a driver's-side outside rearview mirror excepting it being destroyed or removed on purpose by the owner.
On a side note - I am legally 50% uncorrectably blind - which qualifies me for a handicapped license plate. Been tinkering with the idea of getting one for years so I can use those great parking spots....but I keep coming back to the fact that there are people who really
need those spots while I can still walk across a parking lot with no real issue.
