I never understood why this country is so against gay marriage. Let them marry if they want who cares? People should focus on their own lives instead of worrying about what other people do.

First of all, the only time the Bible says anything about homosexuality is in the old testament in Levidicus, which also provides regulations on cleanliness for menstrating women, recommendations on the right price to pay for a slave, and dozens of other bits of out-of-date advice. It is also mentioned in the gospel of Paul, but his mention is tied more to the wanton violence of the Romans than to normal, loving homosexuals. Paul didn't even support heterosexual marriage, and only condoned it as a last resort for people who were unable to control their animal desires. Nowhere does it say anything about homosexuality between women. Nowhere does the bible define marriage as a man and a woman. In fact, most of the examples of marriage in the bible are polygamous. David, Solomon, Abraham, etc. were all polygamists, and most of them were adulterers. If anything, the Bible shows marriage as between one man and as many women as he can afford. Besides, the Bible was not written by God, it was written by men and is therefore inherently flawed.

Second, our constitution guarantees a separation between church and state. Your individual church does not have to accept or condone gay marriage, but since the only arguments against gay marriage are religious, they cannot be considered in any legislation regarding the matter. There is no LEGAL reason to deny gay couples the rights that come with a civil marriage.

And yet, more than 50% of people who get married in this country are allowed to sever that supposedly sacred bond.
