If your wires arent taped and hit the back of HU...

Can the headunit blow? My friends wires came untaped and I think it hit his radio back and blew the radio... is that what happens?

yep, that could definitely possibly short out the HU

If the headunit shorts will the amp/subs connected to it blow too?

probably not, but a short in the system could cause some problems.

shorts = bad.

Well he was trying to push in his hu after taking it out and all of a sudden it just turned off...he looked and seen a wire came untaped RIGHT by the back of the HU... do you think his subs or amp will be damaged if the HU shorted?

well that, or it was the power/ground that was disconnected. Also, are the wires only taped? If so, give your head a shake and at least use crimp connectors.
