What happens when a subwoofer freezes? will a simple recone fix it? thats the first question.. If a recone won't fix it disregard the rest of this..

if a recone will work I have a 12w7 and its frozen.. I got it free so i am not about to ship it to jl and get butt ****ed on pricing.. if i can't fix it relatively cheap i will just continue to let it sit.. My question is they have a 2.9" v.c and thats basically what made them hard to recone.. so i was looking around and guess what i see.. Kicker C12s use 2.9 V.Cs aswell.. so could i call kicker and buy the v.c and use it in the jl? will that work? I have never reconed or built a sub so idk what makes what work.. sorry for being a noob.. I could get the v.c from kicker and get the soft parts from fi or re and have it working again.. and sell it or see what it does..

talk to TeamPSI he can make you a recone....i believe...a frozen cone means motor should still be good.....its possible...cut it apart and find out.
He can do it for a w7 as well? i have never seen any one do so they usually toss em cause jl is stupidly high priced to recone

Cut it apart and find out. It could be either or.

The motor could have shifted, locking the voice coil in place, which means the soft parts may still be okay but the motor is ****ed.

Or, the voice coil could have unwound, causing it to get stuck in the gap, frozen as well.

I'm sure there are other possibilities too, but those are the first two that come to mind. Gonna have to cut off the spider/cone to see...

If the motor will take a standard basket then the W7 is possible too. Just because you found a VC that is 2.9" doesnt mean it will work. The gap could be too tight, the coil could be too tall. Also then it coems time to find a cone. The cone needs to accept a 2.9" coil. You might be able to get a 3" coil cut out to work but I dont know how long that would last. Another option is cutting a 2" VC cone to work.

If its frozen its possible the motor shifted. You will have to tear it apart and find out. One option is see if JL has a build house, then see who else uses their buildhouse. Im not sure if JL even has a build house though. Good luck with it all.

I believe all of JL's building happens here in South FL at their build center. I'm not sure where they source the parts from, however.
