I think my HU amp is toast, please help! Pioneer HU

I recently bought a used Pioneer DEH P680MP and for the last couple weeks its been working great with no problems at all. UNTIL i removed the tired ol 6x9's and installed some new 6x9's and thats when it began.

The previous 6x9's were some brand x speakers that didnt show which was + or - so i took a guess and connected the new ones anyway, turned it on and barely any audio and its audio with what sounds like clipping. I turned the volume up to about 32 and it just sounds horrible, so i thought maybe i had the wires crossed. . didnt matter.

SO i removed the head unit with everthing still connected, disconnected the 2 6x9's then i placed one 6x9 near it and connected it directly clearly knowing which was + and -, and i still get the same sound. I can hear the music but its got that clipping sound, barely audible and it doesnt matter which 6x9 i use, old or new it sounds like shit.

I think my HU amp is fried, am i right? Yes i know it was stupid to try an guess but i need some advice or confirmation that my HU is now a nice paper weight.

if you had the car on while doin that then it prolly is toast, NEVER take out anything or hook up anything/unhook when car is runnin, you'll blow fuses, i learned the hard way.

Try your old 6x9's.

Maybe the new ones were bad out of the box.

Its worth a try.

The car was off when i removed the ol speakers it was until i had the new ones in an connected did i turn on the car.

What else is there?

yeah i tried the old ones and they too sound no different than the new ones. Im afraid i just killed a nice HU.

That sucks.

Does it have RCA's?

You could get an inexpensive amp to drive the speakers.

If you like the HU, it might be cheaper than buying a new one.

i accidently fried my old Pioneer head unit by takin out the rca's while the car was still ON, bad idea then i saw this speaker wire touch metal and boom head unit toast and so were alot of other fuses in my car.

So its definite then that the HU amp is toast??

Yeah it has RCA's so i could just get an amp to power the new speakers but **** this sucks major @ss.

Oh yeah it turns on, plays cd's it does everything else well except for the **** sound.

oh ok that's good that the head unit still works and powers on, is the sound like a scratchy kind of sound at low volume?

yep, and gets much worse as the volume increases

does any bass come out of them that is clear or is that crunchy sounding to, and the highs are they bright or do the speakers put out any of the high notes at all?

the bass has the crunchy sound, the mids an highs are very bright, For a 6x9 it sounds like a little factory speaker with no balls. . haha.

If i dont reply soon it means i went to bed, but we can continue this tomorrow as i do want to find a solution to this problem.

yeah, my problem still isn't solved either, idk man they might be blown or you don't have enough head unit power to power them properly which is makin them distort and sound like shit.
