i miss my surround sound even though it was a piece of shit set up. i dont know much (at all) about home recievers and such , so i was looking into home theater in a box set ups. budgets around 250. i dont need anything outragous just something for movies/tx , xbox and music. 5.1 .. any suggestions?

I HATE HTIBs' ..... They tend to have the worst speakers I have ever seen in them. If you split your budget up you could score a receiver for like $100-$150 on eBay and then pick up 5 small speakers for ~ 100 ..... the sub would be the budget breaker though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

i dont mind spending extra on the sub...cause its a sub //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif id figure thats how people felt about the htib's. any reciever to look into? what feature/s am i looking for? im a newb to HT so try to bare with me. what about those surround sound speaker systems w/o the reciever? like the ones in crutchfeild.

component vid. switching = ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blackeye.gif.66a1670f5aaf7f406e783a63e3387dc5.gif any particular brands to look out for in my budget range? sony's home theater any good? or just as good as thier ca shit?

You need a 5.1... maybe 6.1 channel receiver. Component video switching would be a + but not totally necessary. 80-100 watt per channel would be plenty.
and hdmi input and analog 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1 inputs

my home theater in a box was 409 and i am actually getting truhd and dts plus out of it how you may ask?

well thats where the analog inputs come into play and the hd-dvd player the a1 and the x1 are the only ones on the market that decode that

Switching means it can switch between, say an Xbox360/DVD/HD cable -> and send it to your HD TV..... it's a feature that would "future proof" you a little.

Sony's home stuff is still quite good. As are Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, some Kenwood, etc.

you could always go a while without a sub......

i have an onkyo HTIB for my ghetto south akron apartment, and it's alright, but the sub sucks

if you consider 80hz+ 'subbass' then it will suffice.

not exactly HT style bass, tho

yeah i dont mind waiting. i was thinking ghetto for a minute... 6x9 3-ways ,in a box, playing full range? lol would that work? putting 4 ohms on a ht reciever seeing how their speakers are 8ohms? i could always do that if its possible an put more into the reciever.
