I know its a noob question but whats the difference beween passive and active subs?

car stereo just trying to make my explorer as loud as possible without using up all the space
IMHO, passive radiator is not the way to go to accomplish this goal. You'd be better off with a ported or bandpass enclosure tuned to peak at the vehicle's resonant frequency.

Oh and to answer your original question, a passive radiator is basically just a subwoofer's soft parts without the motor. Weights are added to alter the mms to adjust the tuning frequency. It works similar to a ported enclosure in theory, where the passive radiator does the same job that a port does.

thanks for the tip im in the process or building a box with 2 5"x16" ports for the 2 lanzars that i have now not sure how its gonna due but i hope it will sound good

That sounds like a lot of port area for 10's. You're gonna have a helluva port legnth unless you're tuning really high I believe.
well originally I was building the box for 2 12's and i had already cut the holes for 2 12" subs but then i got the 2 10" subs from one of my friends for cheap so rather than just waste the wood i'm building the box around that what would you suggest for port sizes
